R.W.Bro. Roger Matthews
 
Roger Matthews was born in Belfast in 1946 and was educated in Woodvale Primary School and Grosvenor Grammar School. He entered the Civil Service in October 1964 and for the next 40 years worked mostly in the old D.H.S.S. in and around social security. For a number of years he led Project Teams to implement legislative changes and during the 1990’s visited the Republic of Georgia on six occasions to help them establish a working social security system following the collapse of the Soviet Empire. He took early retirement in 2004.
In 1980 Roger was initiated into Felicitas Masonic Lodge No. 760 and held the post of Almoner before being installed as Worshipful Master in 1988. He served for 14 years as Lodge Secretary before standing down in 2007.
He is a past Chairman and current President of Rossetta Masonic Charity Board. In 1989 he joined the Management Committee of the Masonic Girls Benefit Fund and served 13 years on the Committee before retiring as its Chairman in 2002.
He was appointed as a Provincial Grand Lodge Steward in 1994 and Grand Lodge Steward of Charities in December 2003. Roger has been a member of Down Charity Executive since its inception and became its Chairman in November 2006 following his investiture and installation as a Provincial Assistant Grand Master.
 
His current responsibilities on behalf of the Province are for :- The Charity Executive, District Charity Committees, Province based Charitable Trusts Gift Aid & Covenanting and Provincial Grand Lodge Stewards of Charities & Almoners.
